An eight-run fourth inning, which included a grand slam by John Aase, catapulted Proctor to a 16-2 win in five innings over Mesabi East in a non-conference baseball game on Friday, April 22, at Proctor.

Aase's blast, which made the score 14-2, secured the 10-run lead and chased starter Travis Mount. Mount allowed 14 runs (11 earned) on 11 hits, four walks, and three hit batsmen.

Aase was 2-for-2 with two runs and four RBI. Derek Dahlgren was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Jake Malec was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs, and two RBI. Matt Morris was 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Matt Tracey was 2-for-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI.

Morris (2-0, 0.64 ERA) earned the win by working the first four innings. He allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and one walk. He had five strikeouts. Lucas Nordquist pitched a 1-2-3 fifth inning in relief.

Proctor, now 3-1, travels to St. Cloud Cathedral on Saturday, April 23.

Rails Notes

Jake Malec played in his 80th career game. He is the fourth player in school history to reach 80. He is now tied with Tyler Pionk (Class of 2011) for third. Ahead of him are Ian Scherber (Class of 2012) with 89 and Jimmy Merling (Class of 2013) with 91…Malec became the ninth player in school history to record over 200 at bats. He now has 202…Malec also became the sixth player in school history to reach 60 runs scored. With two runs scored on Friday, he surpassed Drew Scherber (Class of 2007) for sixth place on the school list. Scherber scored 59 runs.
