Central High Wins Over Proctor Nine in 8-1 Contest

by BARRY POPKIN

Superior Central High scored two runs in each of the first four innings in racking up an 8-1 win over the Proctor Rails in a baseball game at the Superior Municipal Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The win was the second of the season for the Vikings in four outings. Proctor played its first game of the season. Central plays Morgan Park, another Big Nine Conference member, on Tuesday.

The Viking pitcher credited with the win was a freshman, Pat Walsh. Walsh was the third Central pitcher. Mike McGrath opened for Central and pitched the first inning but a blister on his pitching hand forced him to retire. Forest Plesko replaced McGrath and worked two innings. Walsh pitched the last four.

Joe Lane, the starting Proctor pitcher, took the loss. He worked the first three innings and then a lefty, Gary Egerdahl, replaced him.

The Viking pitchers struck out nine Rails and walked seven. Walsh had six strikeouts and five walks. Lane had seven strikeouts and three walks. Egerdahl walked two.

After one man was out in the bottom of the first, Mike Cheney, Central center fielder, triples down the left field line. Ross Amundson reached first on interference by the catcher. Cheney scored on a wild pitch and George Stroozas drove in Amundson with a single.

In the second Dan Anderson reached first on an error. Plesko and Jensen walked to load the bases. Amundson drove in two runs with a Texas League single into left field.

Stroozas singled to open the third and then stole second. Crowley hit a grounder to the third baseman, whole bobble of the ball and bad throw allowed Stroozas to score. Crowley scored on a booming double to center field by Anderson.

Proctor scored its only runs in the fourth inning on four straight walks by Walsh.

Amundson was safe on an error to open the bottom of the fourth. Buchanan singled and a sacrifice hit by Stroozas moved the runners to second and third. Amundson scored on an error and Buchanan on a wild pitch.
