ELY, Minn. -- Proctor defeated Virginia 7-0 in the first round of the Section 7AA Playoffs at Veterans Memorial Field in Ely. Jack Nikko and Jimmy Merling combined on the shutout. Nikko earned the win. He pitched the first six innings and allowed three hits and one walk with two strikeouts. Merling pitched a perfect seventh inning with one strikeout.

Paul Hegstrom's single in the first inning scored Evan Scherber for what ended up being the game-winning RBI. Proctor scored three runs in the second inning on Merling's two-run double and Evan Scherber's RBI single. Shane Gould's RBI single scored Matt Dolsen in the third. Ben Nelson hit a double and scored on an error in the fourth. Evan Scherber's single drove in Merling in the fifth.

Merling was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, two RBIs, and a stolen base. Evan Scherber was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

Bryce Neger was 2-for-2 for Virginia.

Virginia was eliminated and Proctor advanced to play International Falls.
