Fritch Has Near No Hitter

Central nipped Proctor 4-3 on a near no-hitter ... in Thursday's Big Ten Conference high school baseball. ...

The near no-hitter -- by Central's Gary Fritch -- came at Wade Stadium. But the effort was nearly nullified by a Proctor rally in the final inning.

Fritch pitched hitless ball for six and one-third innings until Terry Egerdahl got a broken-bat single. Later on, Jim Merling doubled home two runs and another scored on an error before Fritch got out of the inning.

Fritch whiffed nine with his two-hitter, while losing hurler Jim Masterson scattered five hits.

Wayne Soderlund was the Central bat star with two hits and three runs batted in. He also scored the other run on a passed ball following his triple in the third inning. ...

... The Big Ten game at Wade Stadium saw Gary Fritch hurl a no-hitter for six and one-third innings before Proctor struck for three runs in a 4-3 loss to Central. Terry Egerdahl's broken bat single spoiled the no-hitter and a double by Jim Merling drove home two runs. The other run scored on an error.
