Morgan Park trounced Cromwell 11-1 and Central overcame Proctor 5-1 Friday to wind up quarterfinal action in the District 26 baseball tournament. ...

... Proctor and Central played three scoreless innings as both starting pitchers -- the Rails' Bill Moen and Trojan Gary Fritch -- locked horns in what looked to be a pitcher's battle.

But in the bottom of the fourth Central got two runs on consecutive singles by Bill Herrick and Mike Tardy, a sharp double by Wayne Soderlund off the leg of Rail third baseman Blaine Muckala, and a sacrifice fly by Fritch.

The Trojans added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Randy Norgard tripled against the right-centerfield wall with the bases loaded.

Proctor managed one run in the top of the sixth on its only hit of the ball game, a smash to the centerfield wall by Terry Egerdahl to drive in Jim Masterson, who had reached first on a fielder's choice.

Egerdahl wound up with a triple, but he died on third as Fritch bore down and struck out the last batter of the inning.

Fritch totaled 11 strikeouts for the game, and Central coach Bill Aunan figured to start him against Morgan Park on Tuesday. ...
