The Superior Senior High nine exploded for five runs in the first inning and coasted to an 8-1 win over Proctor High's Rails Friday in Superior.

The Spartans took their second win of the year out of three starts.

Three Superior pitchers held Proctor hitless but the Rails managed an unearned run in the third inning.

In the first inning, Superior pieced together hits by Mark Moselle, Rick Mueller, and Bob Pollock with a pair of walks and two Rail miscues.

In the Superior third inning, Dave O'Brien doubled and, after two walks, scored on an error.

Mueller singled in the fifth frame, stole second base and eventually scored on a fielder's choice.

Hits by Chuck Slind and Mark Peterson and a couple of walks produced the Spartans' final tally in the sixth inning.

In the third inning, Proctor's Jeff Merling was safe on an error and eventually tallied on an error.

Pollock, making his first pitching start, worked the first four innings for Superior and gained credit for the win. He fanned five men and walked two. Jon Nystrom pitched the fifth inning and Kurt Standen the final two. Standen whiffed three batters and walked one.

Superior returns to action against the Hayward High Hurricanes on Tuesday afternoon at Hayward. Veteran Lee McPherson, 1-1, will pitch for Superior.
