Cathedral Nipped by Proctor, 5-4
Superior Telegram, April 19, 1968

The Superior Cathedral High nine rallied from deficits three times but Proctor High scored the winning run in an extra inning to take a 5-4 triumph in the Panthers' season opener Wednesday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

The Minnesotans pushed across the deciding tally in the eighth frame as Bob Carlson walked, took second base on a groundout and third on a single by Lonnie Rousse, who opened as the starting pitcher but finished as the rightfielder.

Each team scored singletons in the fifth and sixth innings and a pair in the sevelth before Proctor pulled off the win.

Trailing by 1-0 in the fifth, Fred Berthiaume scored Cathedral's first run as he walked, stole second base and came home on Tom Trianoski's double. Trailing by 2-1, the Panthers scored again as Earl Bell singled, took third base on an error and scored on a groundout. Trailing by 4-2, the Cathedral nine sent the game into extra innings as Trianoski doubled; Jim Schultz walked and Pat Swanson singled to load the bases before Mike Anderson's single plated both runs.

Cathedral outhit Proctor by nine to eight with Bell's three hits leading the way. Trianoski and Swanson added two hits apiece.

Schulz and Gene Moselle worked on the hill for the Panthers. Schulz gave up one run and five hits in five frames and Moselle relinquised three runs and three hits in three innings. Rousse went the first six innings for Proctor with George Herbranson doing the relief work and picking up the win.

Each team had three errors.

Cathedral returns to action Friday afternoon when it takes on Northwood High of Minong at Minong. Swanson is scheduled to open on the mound for the Panthers.
